Dr. Gisele Lôbo-Hajdu has a degree in Biological Sciences, specialization in Genetics by the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (1986), Master in Medical Biochemistry at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (1991) and PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the Universiteit van Amsterdam, The Netherlands (1996). Between 1997 and 1998 she was a Pos Doc with a fellowship from CNPq and Visiting Professor in Animal Genetics at the Institute of Biology Roberto Alcantara Gomes (IBRAG), State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ). Currently she is Associate Professor at the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ), Councillor of the Superior Council of Teaching, Research and Extension (CSEPE), fellow of Prociência Program (since 2003) of that institution, leader of the research group ‘Marine Genetics, Molecular Population and Conservation’ of CNPq and fellow of CNPq Productivity level 2 in Animal Genetics (since 2013).

She is permanent docent and the current Coordinator of the Graduate Program in Ecology and Evolution (PPGEE / UERJ, level 5 CAPES), also acting as a permanent faculty member of the Graduate Program in Oceanography (PPGOCN / UERJ, level 4 CAPES), guiding Masters and PhD students. In addition, develops lines of research in the areas of Phylogeography, Biological Oceanography, Ecology, Taxonomy, Systematics, Genetics and Molecular Biology, with emphasis on Marine Genetics.

The ongoing projects are the following topics: genetic variability, biodiversity, use of marine invertebrates such as pollution biomonitors, biogeography and systematics of Porifera and molecular methods applied to population studies of sponges and sea turtles. It operates in the extension area and environmental education with PROMONTAR-ANGRA project monitoring sea turtles and public awareness of the impacts of human actions in these animals. Coordinates the Marine Laboratory of Genetics (LGMar), at UERJ, since 1997.
